Darcie Statham was a healthy girl with all the energy and vitality we hope to see in any child. She played with brothers, rode her horse, and went to school. But as she approached her mid-teens something began to go terribly wrong. A slight lack of physical coordination slowly grew into a devastating illness that trapped her in an invalid’s bed, unable to raise even her head. Darcie was destined to live under constant care in homes meant only for the very aged. Although she was examined by renowned doctors and received hundreds of medical tests, her crippling illness remained a mystery.

Until something miraculous changed everything! Live Out Loud is not only an account of unexpected devastation — it is a testimony of healing and recovery by the grace of God.

Darcie’s inspiring yet haunting words give us permission to enter the closets of a survivor’s mind to explore what it is like to be faced with uncertain health, potential death, innumerable indignities and the miracle of blessings received. Here is a secret world very few of us are privy to; life on the inside of a young girl trapped in her body, living in an institution meant for old people, suffering in chronic pain and finding little comfort in the routines and procedures of the health care system.

As we stagger through her world in disbelief, shock, anger and outrage we discover Darcie’s incredible strength and spirit, endless motivation and inspiring capacity to find peace unimpeded by what came before. While Darcie holds the door wider to let the reader in, we are struck by her lively sense of humour, her courage and tenacity and her fortitude to bear the cross she was given. She embraces forgiveness so that she can move forward, living her life out loud, one tiny step at a time to blossom from the angst of the teenage soul to the wisdom and maturity of a woman ripe with love, laughter and an unwavering belief in the God who granted her the ultimate gift of a miracle. Darcie’s story will undoubtedly leave the door ajar to raise awareness of what really goes on in health care institutions and while living in the care of others. May her words serve to help protect the lives of the vulnerable, lost voices no longer given a say.

It has been an honour of a lifetime to witness the miracle of Darcie’s incredible journey … she will continue to inspire and motivate us all as she journeys on, completing her life’s work.
